Looking to spend a day hiking close to Winston-Salem? Here are three of our favorite spots!
Winston-Salem is a wonderful community to be a part of. (Yes, we’re biased, but it happens to also be true!) :) One of the things we love about living here is being in the North Carolina piedmont area. We have easy access to lots of great outdoor activities, many of which are within easy day trip distance.
Here are just a few of our favorite hiking locations that are easily reachable from Winston-Salem:
Pilot Mountain State Park: If this distinct mountain looks familiar, it might be because you recognize it as “Mt. Pilot” from the Andy Griffith Show. It’s very close to Winston-Salem and offers miles of trails, camping, and climbing. (You can get a great view of downtown Winston-Salem from the mountain, too, which is fun!)
Grandfather Mountain State Park: Located in Banner Elk, NC, Grandfather Mountain is only two hours away from Winston. Known as being a place for challenging hikes and severe weather, a hiking experience at Grandfather Mountain includes both cliffs and ladders to climb. It’s worth it, though -- the view from the top is spectacular!
Hanging Rock State Park: This spot is less than an hour from us, making it an easy one to squeeze into a Saturday or Sunday. It boasts more than 20 miles of hiking trails that offer amazing views and access to beautiful streams and waterfalls along the way. Camping is available, too, if you want to extend your day trip into an overnight!
